Verizon Sues FCC: Net Neutrality Battle Heats Up

Friday, January 21st, 2011

It was just a month ago that the FCC took aim at internet service providers by adopting rules to regulate internet access.

Today the first counter-punch was thrown as Verizon Communications filed a federal lawsuit to challenge the order.

In a press release sent out addressing the matter, the company said it was “concerned by the FCC’s assertion of broad authority for sweeping new regulation of broadband networks and the Internet itself.”

This comes after a December decision by the FCC to put a set of rules in place in an attempt to regulate ISP’s ability to control traffic on both broadband and wireless networks.

On the surface, it sounds like the FCC’s heart is in the right place. Its mission allegedly is to stop any unreasonable favoritism or discrimination against web sites or applications that come across a network. It’s been a topic of concern for years now.

But as with all things government-related, the concern is about how much power the government should have in addressing matters on a public platform such as the internet.

Verizon’s quick counter is highly strategic. The case is filed in U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia which ruled in a similar case that the FCC exceeded its authority in attempts to sanction Comcast for blocking web traffic and has hired the same successful attorney from the case to represent them.

Word has gotten out that Verizon is also attempting to pick the judges as well, but they might be getting a bit carried away there.

No matter which way the ruling turns out, this battle is far from being over. Plan on many more of these types of suits and counter-suits on the matter throughout the rest of the year.

What Now For Yahoo!?

Friday, December 17th, 2010

It seems these days you can’t shake a stick without hitting some sort of news on the declining state of Yahoo!. The newest bit of information to come out verifies that it will be parting ways with a host of its services, some of which will be axed and some of which could be merged with other brands.

This comes on the heels of weeks of speculation – and finally confirmation – that hundreds of Yahoo! employees would be let go (4% of its workforce in all).  That news set the table for this current batch of cutbacks.

So, what happens to Yahoo! in the next year? That’s a questions that industry experts have been trying to answer for some time now and even this recent chain of events doesn’t tip anything off as far as what comes of the one-time internet powerhouse. Not to say that Yahoo! is not still a valuable commodity. Millions still use its plethora of services, including Yahoo! Mail.  But it’s easy to forget just how many sites fell under the Yahoo umbrella. Among those that will feel the wrath of the chopping block include Delicious, Yahoo! Buzz, Yahoo! Bookmarks, MyBlogLog and AltaVista. It should be noted though, that not all will be necessarily shut down. Some, like the popular Delicious, may find homes elsewhere.

Said a Yahoo! spokesperson, “Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond.”

In an interesting take on matters, Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank which owns a sizable portion of Yahoo! Japan, said to DealBook that Yahoo! was foolish for trying to be an all things media-type site and acquiring services and brands it had no idea what to do with instead of focusing on innovating its technology in search.

At this juncture it’s hard to say what Yahoo’s “core strengths” are. Many in the industry believe the company has given up on its search technology after its search and ad deal with Microsoft. Now it’s giving up on relatively popular ideas like social bookmarking, it seems.

With the company seemingly having trouble finding its identity, the speculation truly begins. Will Yahoo! itself shutdown? Will there be a merger? Will it slowly fade away while continuing to downsize? Will there be some sort of new branding leading to resurgence? The only certainty here is that this one-time giant is standing at a crucial fork in the road.

eZanga CEO Offers Tips to Build a Successful SEM Campaign

Monday, November 8th, 2010

The search for a product or service often begins online, which means business owners need to think about their companies’ online presence and how they are going to get their sites in front of potential customers. The most effective way to achieve this visibility is through search engine marketing (SEM), which involves advertising on search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes and ask, “where would I look first?” More than likely, your answer is a search engine. SEM puts your company’s site directly in front of the right audience, rather than relying on the search engine itself to decide how your company’s site should rank on the organic listing.

With this in mind, it’s important to market your products and services through SEM; however for the newcomers and busy business owners who either lack the industry knowledge or necessary time may find SEM to be overwhelming. That being said, I decided to put together a few tips to help potential online marketers navigate through the SEM terrain:

Industry Experts- If you’re not SEM-savvy, make sure the people you hire (either in-house or through an agency) know what they are doing. It’s important to remember that not all digital marketing companies specialize in search marketing. Make sure the person or team you hire has enough experience, knowledge, and focus specifically in search engine marketing.

Tools and Reports- SEM is 100% quantifiable, meaning  results can be measured clearly with numbers down to the penny. Whether you’re hiring someone in-house or an outside SEM firm, make sure the right tools and reports are in place to monitor the campaign’s performance. Also, make sure the person in charge of your campaign knows how to interpret and use these tools.

Phone Call Tracking- This is especially important for small businesses considering most conversions start with a call. Phone call tracking helps the SEM expert decide how the campaign should be optimized, and also gives the business owner complete transparency to see performance, conversions, and a return on investment.

Landing Page- This is the first thing a prospective customer sees when they click on an ad on a search engine. Review the landing page where searchers are directed when the advertisement is clicked. Even if the homepage is rich with useful content, it may not convert well. A landing page should be focused and hook the searcher into wanting to learn more about the company and eventually lead to a conversion.

Keyword Selection- When selecting keywords, brainstorm words that you think potential customers would use to search for the product or service you provide, including misspellings. The less competitive the keyword, the lower the cost per click.
