3 Ways to Interact on Pinterest

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

A social media revolution seems to be happening all around us. But as companies are rushing to embrace social media, they frequently lose focus. Everyone says that your business needs to utilize social media more, but how many people tell you how? This post is part of a series on different ways you can use social media to interact with your customers.

Pinterest is a social network of virtual bulletin boards where users can organize images and videos from across the web into collections, called pin boards. While it’s technically still invite-only, it’s not hard to get your hands on an invitation and becomes incredibly addicting.  While some still believe it to be a place for DIY-ers and brides-to-be, brands are finally showing up and doing a lot with it.

1. Show who you are. – Show your followers who they are following and could possibly do business with sometime. There are endless ways to do this. One idea is to pin pictures of your team, as we have done. This is a great idea for businesses that may not always interact with their customers face-to-face, as it matches a face to a name and/or voice.

You can also pin pictures of your work environment, especially if it’s unique! Lastly, pin pictures and videos that convey the mood or atmosphere of your company. For example, pranks are a big part of the eZanga culture. We have created a board to pin pictures and videos of pranks we have played in the office as well as prankspiration for the future.

2. Pin what you do. – While obviously you should be pinning focused content related to your niche, don’t stop there. You are a part of an entire industry, and both you and your followers need to be informed about it. Pinterest is great for learning since so many of us are visual learners. You’ll be surprised at how much information you can learn from the infographicsthat are pinned.

You can also post pictures and videos of your own products as long as you balance out the self-promotion with other content.  Pinterest even has a price feature, where if you type a currency symbol with an amount into the pin’s description, and it will add a price “flag” to the image (click for example) as well as list it in the “Gifts” section of the site. Supplement promotional pins with pins of related products, useful tips for your product, etc.

3. Involve your followers. – As always, people need a reason to follow you, so give them one. The reason can be anything from exclusive discounts and coupons to witty comments. Different ways to involve your followers include offering discounts and holding contests, crowdsourcing boards to allow followers to contribute pins, and offering commentary on what your followers pin, either through repinning or commenting.

3 Ways to Interact on Google+

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

When we first started the 3 ways to interact series, there were no brand pages on Google+. But on November 7, Google launched brand pages on their newest social network. Almost two months later, many brands have set up pages but are having trouble building a following on the network and interacting.

The main benefit most brands see in a Google+ brand page is the implications for search, especially as pages begin to show in Google search results. But for your page to accomplish anything, as always, you need to interact. Here are some tips:

1. Use Hangouts. – If you aren’t familiar, Hangouts is the Google+ video conferencing feature where you can “hang out” with up to 10 others. Hangouts also have text chat windows, YouTube integration, and “Hangouts with Extras” (which includes screen sharing and Google Docs collaboration). Try starting Hangouts and joining sessions hosted by others. Use Hangouts to:

  • Hold a “Town Hall” where fans and customers are introduced to the people of your brand/company. This personalizes your brand and lets those in the Hangout learn from your company’s expertise.
  • Provide personalized customer service or use the opportunity to explain things your fans may frequently have problems with.
  • Provide tutorials and demonstrations about things relevant to your company’s industry.
  • Just hang out. You need to know a lot about your audience, and what better way to find out than to ask them? Invite people into a Hangout just to hang out. You can learn about your customers and learn from them, and will make them feel like they really know your brand on a personal level.

2. Connect your brand page. – If you are having trouble building an audience, make sure your page is visible. Make sure you connect the brand page to your company’s website and use the Google+ badge that allows users to add you to their circles right from your website. You can also add links to the “Custom Links” area of the “About” section of your brand page. You can add as many links as you want, so make your other social profiles available that way. Lastly, utilize the +1 button to integrate search with social.

3. Explore and connect. – One downside of Google+ brand pages is that pages cannot add a user to its’ circles unless the user has the brand page in his or her circles. But there are other ways to drive users to your brand page. You can still use your individual profile to connect with people, and this may actually be better than the alternative. Reaching out to someone personally will build more meaningful connections and if you are talking about your brand, they will likely go to the page on their own at some point.

3 Ways to Interact on Tumblr

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

A social media revolution seems to be happening all around us. But as companies are rushing to embrace social media, they frequently lose focus.

Everyone says that your business needs to utilize social media more, but how many people tell you how? This post is part of a series on different ways you can use social media to interact with your customers.

Tumblr, if you have not heard of it, is a microblogging site that has been said fall somewhere between Facebook and Twitter. Like Facebook, you can ‘Like’ posts.

Like Twitter, you can ‘Follow’ users and ‘Reblog’ their posts. But unlike Twitter, Tumblr does not have a 140 character limit. Actually, Tumblr tries not to limit you in any ways.

The platform has a heavy emphasis on ease of use and multimedia. It also does not limit the type of posts you can create. There are seven types of posts: text, photo, quote, link, chat, audio, and video:

Tumblr is popular among younger users, looking for humorous pictures and animations. Because of this, Tumblr has been underestimated in business use. But Tumblr has been especially important for the fashion and design industries and it’s time other industries follow. Here, we take a look at how certain activities on Tumblr will help your business.

  1. Supplement or personalize your brand. – You can use your company’s Tumblr blog as an extension of your brand. A presence on yet another social network can just add more depth to your brand’s story. One possible way to do this is to use a Tumblr blog as a “behind-the-scenes” look into your company, similar to Mashable HQ. Mashable uses Tumblr to post pictures of employees, of the office, company news, and anything that can convey what the atmosphere is like at their headquarters.
  2. Emphasize multimedia and utilize tags. – It’s been reported that half of all Tumblr posts are image-based. Take advantage of this and put extra effort into finding excellent pictures or other multimedia for your Tumblr posts. Not only will the great pictures make users want to reblog your posts more, but they will less likely to be passed over by people only paying attention to the pictures on their dashboard.
Tumblr also has a tag feature that makes it easy to track certain topics. Users can explore and track tags from their dashboard. Unlike Twitter’s hashtags, tags are separated from the rest of the content and at the bottom of the post. Because of this, you don’t need to worry about using too many (as long as ALL of them are actually relevant to the post). It won’t make anything hard to read or put you over a character limit.
  3. Highlight the best of your brand. – Use Tumblr to squeeze more life out of your content from elsewhere. Because of the emphasis on pictures and tags explained earlier, Tumblr can be use to re-purpose posts and use them to bring more people to the original content. For example, you can take your best blog posts, pick out an attention-grabbing picture and the post’s best paragraph or a description, and post that on Tumblr with several relevant tags. Just keep in mind that your audiences are different on all platforms, so only highlight content that your Tumblr audience will be interested in.

3 Ways to Interact on LinkedIn

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

A social media revolution seems to be happening all around us. But as companies are rushing to embrace social media, they frequently lose focus. Everyone says that your business needs to utilize social media more, but how many people tell you how? This post is part of a series on different ways you can use social media to interact with your customers.

LinkedIn is known as a great tool for developing your personal brand, but that’s not all its for! LinkedIn is also a great tool for businesses. As you develop your company’s presence on LinkedIn, here are three things you should be focusing on.

1. Complete your company profile. - If you haven’t already set up your company’s profile on LinkedIn, check out this guide because it’s something you should do as soon as possible. Your company profile should have a good description of your company, keywords, your logo, location, etc. It should be as complete as possible. In addition to this basic info about your company, you can also highlight products your company offers and even get recommendations from customers. You can even post status updates from your company’s page, up to 500 characters long. The updates support text as well as pictures, videos, and links.

2. Participate in groups. - Creating and joining LinkedIn groups is important to find people to connect with. Participating in groups, and especially creating your own, can give you lots of new leads. You should join groups related to your industry as well as regional groups as a way to connect with other businesses in your region. Also think about what sort of groups your target customer may join. Groups are a place to find new information and learn more, as well as to find new connections.

3. LinkedIn Answers. – Answers is a tool that not many people know about, making it even more valuable to those who do. Answering questions builds credibility and can also generate leads. You can even subscribe via RSS to questions from categories you have the most expertise in. Asking questions yourself can connect you to more experts. Social Media Examiner suggests that when answering questions, research the person asking the question and tie a personal response into your answer, suggest other places to go for more information, and invite them to connect for further discussion.

3 Ways to Interact on YouTube

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

A social media revolution seems to be happening all around us. But as companies are rushing to embrace social media, they frequently lose focus. Everyone says that your business needs to utilize social media more, but how many people tell you how? This post is part of a series on different ways you can use social media to interact with your customers.

We have already talked about Facebook and Twitter, the most obvious social media platforms to utilize for business. But other social networks can be just as effective.

YouTube and other video hosting websites provide you with an environment different from other social networks. Here are some important things to do to develop your YouTube presence.

1. Organize your channel. – First things first: if your YouTube channel is not organized and set up strategically, you will not see results. Use playlists to sort your videos into groups, either by topic or by type of video. Also remember to use SEO for your channel. A lot of SEO practices can be transferred very easily over to YouTube search. Use keywords in your video titles and descriptions, and make sure to use tags. Lastly, make sure there are calls to action on your channel and in your videos. Do you want viewers to head over to your website, Facebook page, or Twitter feed after watching your videos? Then point them there.

2. Join/start conversations. – Just as with Facebook and Twitter, you cannot wait for someone to interact with you, you need to go searching for interaction. Find channels relevant to your industry/products and become friends with them. Just as with other social networks, you can friend users. You can also like videos and comment on them.

3. Create the right kind of content. – Similar to any other social network, your content must be specially catered to a certain medium. Do not just post advertisements, focus on more fun and casual content. Good ideas for content can be podcasts or webisodes, customer testimonials, ways for customers to make the most out of your products, and how-to/customer service videos.

3 Ways to Interact on Twitter

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

A social media revolution seems to be happening all around us. But as companies are rushing to embrace social media, they frequently lose focus. Everyone says that your business needs to utilize social media more, but how many people tell you how? This post is part of a series on different ways you can use social media to interact with your customers.

A few days ago, we went over interacting on Facebook. Today, we’ll be looking at Twitter.

1. Participate in Twitter chats. - Participate in Twitter chats related to your industry, or start your own! Twitter chats are one of the best ways to build relationships and learn valuable lessons. If you have never participated in one before, do some research first. Since you should already be following important people and influencers in your industry, it shouldn’t be hard to find chats to participate in. I have found many chats by paying attention to which chats users I follow take part in. There are also a lot of other ways to find chats; you can just search or look at this list. You can also create a Twitter chat for your industry, a related industry, your customers, or anyone else. Holding a chat with your customers about your products can bring you closer to your customers.

2. Ask and answer questions. – This is just as simple as it sounds. People frequently turn to Twitter for help or advice. It is important that if anyone ever has a question about your company or products, they can count on a response. Keep an eye on not only mentions of you and your product, but also anything related. Answering questions about topics besides your own company will help establish credibility as a helpful source. Also, look at the questions your customers and followers are asking. If you know the answer to any of them, even if it’s not related, help them out.

3. Be personable. – Most importantly, be personable. Have fun with Twitter. It’s okay (even encouraged) to post casual thoughts on Twitter. Your followers need to know that there is a person behind the Twitter account. If a company’s whole social media presence is automated, followers will have no desire to interact. Fun, off-topic tweets are good ways to connect with customers beyond your product.

3 Ways to Interact on Facebook

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

A social media revolution seems to be happening all around us. But as companies are rushing to embrace social media, they frequently lose focus. Everyone says that your business needs to utilize social media more, but how many people tell you how? This post is part of a series on different ways you can use social media to interact with your customers.

Facebook is obviously the most popular social network, ahead of Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and everything else. But besides being the largest social network, it is also the network on which customers interact with brands the most. Your brand probably already has a Facebook page, but do you use it in the right ways?

Here are 3 suggestions for interacting with your customers on Facebook.

  1. Ask questions. – Whether you use the “Ask a question” polling feature or a regular status update, it is important to learn as much as possible about your customers. You can ask questions about everyday life to learn more about the behaviors of your customers, or get more specific. Ask people to share their experiences using your product. Whether reviews are good or bad, you can use them.
  2. Reward your fans. – Contests and promotions are excellent ways to spark interaction and get new fans or customers. Your Facebook fans need a reason to continue following your business, so make it worthwhile for them. Offer special deals that are exclusive to your Facebook fans or let them be the first to know about news, special events, or special offers. Contests that require fans to ‘Like’ your page and share it with friends are very popular. By sharing your page with their other friends, fans are getting a chance to win a prize as well as recommending your business to their friends. It’s a win-win.
  3. Interact back. – This is the most important thing to keep in mind. It doesn’t matter how many people ‘Like’ your Facebook page if it hasn’t sparked meaningful, two-way interactions. When a customer reaches out to you in any way, it is absolutely necessary to respond. Otherwise, what’s the point?
