Why Daily Deal Sites are Plummeting

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

grouponInternet crazes come and go, end of story. Do you recall logging into Facebook every day to check your farm? Dare I mention the once booming MySpace or Xanga?

It seems like every newest fad hits viral, only to come spiraling down after users move on to the next best. It seems that daily deals companies such as Groupon and LivingSocial have now fallen victim to this dreaded cycle.

Groupon, the deal-of-the-day website that features discounted gift certificates usable at local and national companies, has failed to reach revenue expectations more than once.

The most recent falter was on Wednesday, February 27th. Groupon missed earning estimates for the last quarter and its outlook for the next quarter was also lower than analysts expected, sending the stock down as much as 27% in after-hours trading.

A Poke at Groupon’s Discount on Health Services

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

A recent article in MSN commented on Groupon offering more coupons for healthcare services and the possible downsides.

Just looking through my personal inbox I have received the following offers from LivingSocial and Groupon in the last month alone (and these are just a few):

  • Eye exam and $200 worth of glasses- A $335 value for $99.
  • Chiropractic Consult and Exam- A $70 value for $17
  • 87% off spider vein and laser hair removal
  • 56% off Botox
  • 72% off acupuncture session

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be too hasty to get an acupuncture session at 72% off. Why? Think about doing a job for minimum wage and then imagine ¾ of your pay is instantly gone, but you still have to do the same job…

And there are about 100 people waiting in line for your services which means you are booked back-to-back for the next few days and/or you have to cut a few corners to service them all. Do you really want that grumpy, overworked person poking you with needles?

I’m not saying you will receive shoddy service, but how would you feel if you were in that situation?

However, I do appreciate that consumers are able to get discounts from somewhere for certain things they need during these hard economic times like eye exams and dental care.

Regardless, I try to keep in mind a piece of advice my mother always told me: You get what you pay for.

Do you use deal-of-the-day sites like Groupon or Living Social? If you have, what has your experience been like? If not, then why not?

Viral Facebook Scam of bin Laden

Following President Obama’s announcement of the death of Former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden this week, a scam emerged on Facebook claiming to be a picture of the terrorist prior to being buried at sea, as well as a video of his shooting. As you can imagine, the photograph and video were not only false, but suspected to be potential malware attacks for those Facebook users who clicked on the links.

News of bin Laden’s Death

Last week, eZanga.com reported that users commented on the Royal Wedding on Facebook in large numbers (somewhere between 75 and 100 status updates about the wedding every second). This week, however, many were shocked to see the numbers on social media that came out of the news of bin Laden’s death. More than 50% of internet users said to have received the news of  bin Laden’s death through social media websites. On top of those astonishing numbers, we learned that 30% got the news from Twitter, 20% from Facebook, and only 17.4% from TV.

Facebook Pays YOU!

Zuckerberg puts his money where his mouth is! Facebook announced on Thursday that it will now offer a new program that pays its users to watch advertisements online. The new program acts as an incentive by enticing viewers with Facebook Credits that can be cashed in on its (other) new program, Facebook Deals, which acts similarly to Groupon. It was reported that each ad viewing will be worth one credit, which is the equivalent of 10 cents.

Facebook Buying Skype?

While no official announcement has been made, there are “credible” sources going around saying that Facebook and Google are in talks with Skype about joining forces. After Skype’s delay of its initial public offering, people began speculating that Mark Zuckerberg has been considering purchasing the web video conferencing service for $3 billion to $4 billion.

Weekly Wrap-Up – Facebook Friday

Friday, April 29th, 2011

On any given day, it’s a difficult task trying to find tech related news that doesn’t pertain to Facebook. You just can’t escape the media monster that it is Facebook. So, considering the amount of press that the social media site gets on a daily bases, we at eZanga have decided to start a weekly wrap up of all the latest news pertaining to the popular website. We figured, might as well join ‘em and this seems to be the most efficient way to get the news out there without neglecting other stories throughout the week.

So, now that the introductions for our new project are out of the way, let’s get down to business.

The Royal Wedding and Its Presence on Facebook

The big story around the world this week was the Royal Wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, of course.

First we learned that a Buckingham Palace guard, scheduled to serve as security at the wedding, was dismissed from his duties as a result of a nasty comment made about Kate Middleton that he posted on Facebook. Scots Guardsman Cameron Reilly called Prince William’s bride a “stupid stuck up cow” and a “posh b****”. Not only was the post, which was a grammatical nightmare, snide and unprofessional, but downright cruel and spiteful. You should be ashamed of yourself, Mr. Reilly. No wonder he missed the most anticipated event Britain has seen in years.

And boy, was it an event! Facebook (and Twitter) were all abuzz today over the Royal nuptials. Trending topics on social media sites were all about Westminster Abby, William and Kate, and their first kiss. Viewers put their two cents on Facebook, with somewhere between 75 and 100 status updates about the wedding every second!

Tornado Victims Utilize Facebook

In the wake of the devastating storms that ripped through much of the US, Patty Bullion, an Alabama resident, began a Facebook page titled “Pictures and Documents found after the April 27, 2011 Tornadoes.” Bullion intended to use the site as a tool for people affected by the tornadoes to post pictures and identifying information of found items. “As I was picking the pictures up it was just breaking my heart,” Bullion said of simply wanting to help people find their items.

Facebook Competes with Groupon

The social media site announced on Tuesday that it will offer coupons for purchase online. Facebook Deals will be available on the website and will be geared towards social events, such as concerts and wine tastings. The new concept will be run and tested in five major cities to start with, and may expand further, depending on the level of success.

Lady Gaga Teams up with Robin Hood Foundation for Facebook Contests

Listen up, little monsters! Gaga is working with the New York based Robin Hood Foundation, which aids the poor and homeless. Ms. Gaga’s mission with one of the two contests is to increase the number of Facebook “likes” for the charity. The second contest  asks for the help of Facebook fans to decide how Lady Gaga will disperse a $1 million donation to the Robin Hood Foundation. Way to put your money where your mouth is, Gaga!

Facebook Send Button

Also this week, Facebook launched a new button: “Send”. This nifty little click-able object is very similar to the “Like” button, boasting functionality as a plug-in for websites to use to encourage sharing among friends. However, the key difference of the “Send” button is its ability to preserve privacy. Upon being clicked, rather than instantaneously displaying your appreciation  of the site to your entire friend list, a pop-up appears. You can then designate any number of specific friends or even email addresses with which you want to share. Deals: Facebook’s Counter to Groupon

Friday, March 18th, 2011

At this point, most of us have heard about Groupon, the website that promotes deals-of-the-day to localized markets around the world. Well now, Facebook (it’s surprising it took them this long) is about to horn in on the action through full-fledged promotion of its Deals service.

First announced last November, according to Computerworld, Facebook Deals began as an outlet for local businesses to offer deals to visitors of their company page.  On Wednesday, however, Facebook kicked things up a notch. They have now launched a campaign promoting that users subscribe to Deals to receive updates about coupons, specials, etc. directly into their news feed. This eliminates the need to go to specific company pages to find the deals, and it allows greater visibility, especially since Facebook can manipulate the feed using EdgeRank, says Inside Facebook.

Initially, Deals will only be offered to subscribers in five test markets: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, and San Francisco. Facebook will likely expand the offers nationwide soon enough, unless the revamped Deals is a complete bust.  But that won’t happen. The social network plans to turn this service into a major form of business, and as long as it can mesh the Deals in with news feeds without being invasive, that’s exactly what will happen. Groupon is definitely aware of this already, as they have an ad blitz prepared, says Mashable.

So yet again, Facebook is making strides to be your one-stop-shop while on the web. What will be next, Facebook tax preparation and filing?

Facebook to Test Groupon-Like Deals

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Local coupon deals have become very trendy among tech companies. Foursquare just added 6 new types of specials, while Groupon and Living Social continue to be extremely successful.

Now, Facebook will soon be expanding its deals discount service. Coupons will be available to Facebook’s 500 million users, but whether they will cap the number of coupons is still unknown.

The service is debuting in five test markets: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, and San Francisco. Users will be able to view all local promotions on a special page located on the upper-left side of their Facebook homepage. The coupons can then be shared with friends.

Facebook says it’s focusing its deals on services users are more likely to do with others. “You won’t get your legs waxed with friends,” Emily White, Facebook’s director of local operations, told The Financial Times. “You dine out, you go to concerts, you do outdoor activities. We want to make sure those experiences are maximized.”

Facebook declined to say how the coupons would be purchased, but the company’s virtual currency, Facebook Credits, may be used to purchase deals. Using Facebook Credits would expand its user base, however the company is still exploring different ways for users to buy. The service should be available to all users within the next couple of weeks.
