In a world where you need to make your point in 140 characters or less, Trimit is the new app that lets you shrink and summarize text with just a shake of your iPhone.

The patent-pending algorithm created by Frimby Limited ranks which parts of the text are most important based on how a sentence is structured. It then fits those parts together in a manner that conveys maximum information into a specified length and can be read cohesively.

To use it, copy a link to something you want to share with people (like this article), paste it into the “import text source from url” field to get an extraction of the text. From there you edit settings in Mode View.

Your six length options for summarizing are:

1,000 characters

Twitter : 140 characters

Facebook : 421 characters

iPhone text message : 300 characters

Email message: 550 characters

Tumblr: 700 characters

Brevity: Priceless (just kidding…but not really)

You can also turn off/on abbreviations and vowels, so “too” becomes “2” and “navigate” becomes “navig8”. After a shake, you can share the summary of the article via your social networks or email.

The reviews are a bit scattered. While the concept is interesting in theory, in practice, the functionality of the product still needs a few tweaks. Some think Trimit is contributing to the destruction of the English language while others believe it is a great way to concisely communicate.

If Shakespeare were alive today I believe his sentiments would go something like this: “2 trim r not 2 trim. Dat is de ?”

What do you think?
