Fraudulent Tweets Investigated by Secret Service

This Sunday, a team of hackers was able to tap into the Fox News political Twitter account and posted six false tweets stating that President Obama had been assassinated, as seen here. There is talk that the hackers responsible for the fraudulent tweets are called The Script Kiddies, whose logo replaced the Fox News logo on the Twitter account for a short time late Sunday night.

Fox News (the real Fox News, not the hackers) contacted the Secret Service, which announced yesterday that it will investigate the situation and handle it with an “appropriate follow up,” said by Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie.

Biden Now on Twitter

On another presidential note…make that vice-presidential…Vice President Joe Biden has a Twitter account as of this Independence Day. Biden posted his first tweet from @VP stating “”VP & Dr. B hope you take time to think about our troops & military families this Independence Day, Happy 4th from OVP!”

While some of the tweets for his account will be made directly from Biden, his staff will also be managing the account for him, much like President Obama runs his Twitter presence.

Announcement of the @VP Twitter account was made in a Whitehouse blog post, which stated “Through @VP, Vice President Biden’s staff will keep followers up to speed on all things happening in the Office of the Vice President (OVP) – from the West Wing, to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and the Office of Dr. Jill Biden, to the Naval Observatory. @VP will be on the road with the Vice President across the country and around the world, providing updates on the latest news and announcements coming out of OVP, as well as a behind the scenes look at Veep-life.”

Ryan Dunn’s Tragic Death Documented on Twitter

Ryan Dunn, Jackass movie star, died in a high-speed car accident Monday morning at 2:38 AM in Pennsylvania, along with friend and Jackass production assistant Zachary Hartwell.

The 34-year-old posted a photo to Twitter via his Tumblr blog of himself and two friends drinking at the West Chester bar Barnaby’s of America just hours before his death.

The sad news of Dunn’s death caused his name to become a trending topic on Twitter for most of yesterday. The social media site was flooded with Tweets from Dunn’s friends and fans mourning and memorializing him.

Celebrities including Steve-O (of the Jackass franchise), Carey Hart, and Sofia Coppola publicized their condolences for his family’s loss. In a tweet addressing Dunn’s passing, Rachael Leigh Cook remembered him as “an incredibly funny, kind, and generous person. My heart goes out to Angie & his family.”

While alcohol has not been announced as the cause of the accident thus far, many are assuming that to be the case… including Roger Ebert, who Tweeted “”Friends don’t let Jackasses drink and drive.”

This comment spurred a slew of angry Tweets towards Ebert, of course. Now, Ebert is trending on Twitter.

Roger Epert’s Facebook page has now been deleted, with Facebook siting his comments as violoating its “terms and conditions”.

Obama Himself on Twitter

As a Father’s Day tribute, President Barack Obama personally wrote a message via his Twitter account (which is normally run by Democratic National Committee staffers), saying “Being a father is sometimes my hardest but always my most rewarding job. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. –BO”

According to an announcement made on BarackObama.com on Friday, any tweets or Facebook messages signed “-BO” will indicate that it was written by the President himself.
