UK tourists sent home after jokes on Twitter

While getting ready for a vacation to the United States, Leigh Van Bryan tweeted a couple of jokes about his upcoming visit, including that he had plans to dig up Marilyn Monroe’s grave and destroy America. Once the tweets were seen by Homeland Security, Van Bryan and travel partner Emily Bunting were detained upon arriving in Los Angeles.

The two were held on suspicion of planning to commit crimes. The pair was reportedly questions for five hours, after which they were put on a van and held overnight. After spending over twelve hours in separate holding cells, they were put on a flight home.

Twitter to begin censoring tweets by country

On Thursday, Twitter announced that it would begin censoring content on the site on a country-by-country basis. Twitter said on the official Twitter blog that “As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some will differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others will be similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain content…”

This announcement was met with outrage from many, along with many planning to boycott the service. But actually, Twitter has always had to remove content that is illegal in one country or another. Twitter used to have to remove content globally.

The plan is completely reactive, meaning that they will withhold specific content, if necessary, in response to “a valid and applicable legal request”. Twitter is also aiming for complete transparency, building in a way to “communicate transparently to users when the content is withheld, and why.” When content is withheld from a certain country, users in that country will see an alert box in place of the tweet or account. Twitter also created a new page for users for find notices relating to Twitter.

McDonald’s latest #McFail

McDonald’s found themselves in hot water on Twitter over the summer when some folks played a “McHoax”. Well now the company is trying to recover from another social media disaster. Last week, McDonald’s ran a Promoted Trends campaign on Twitter, promoting the hashtags #MeetTheFarmers and #McDStories.

The campaign was supposed to promote the farmers McDonald’s gets produce from. But the #McDStories hashtag was quickly taken over by critics of the company’s food. I think Forbes put it best: this is an example of “when a hashtag becomes a bashtag“.

The hashtag was quickly taken over by people bashing McDonald’s and perpetuating stereotypes about people that eat there. People mentioned bad service, bad food, health disorders, and drug use…hardly the kind of content McDonald’s had in mind when they paid for the hashtag to appear as a Promoted Trend.

After about 2 hours, McDonald’s pulled the campaign. The next day, McDonald’s tried again by launching another hashtag: #littlethings. The responses were much more positive, such as “a good cup of coffee in the morning.” The fiasco shows all companies  how much thought must go into launching a campaign on Twitter.

Elon’s iMedia Twitter scholarship

Elon University is taking social media in education to a new place: the application process. The iMedia program at Elon is holding a Twitter contest from December 1 to March 15, in which two winners will receive $3,000 scholarships. The scholarship will be for applicants of the M.A. in Interactive Media program.

The contest asks prospective students to tweet about how the iMedia program will shift their career in new directions. Prospective students have to compose a single tweet answering that question and include mention of the program’s Twitter handle (@elonimedia) and the hashtag #shiftimedia.

The director of Elon’s M.A. in Interactive Media program, David Copeland, told E-Net! News, “This year, through one of the most interactive social media tools, we wanted to offer prospective iMedia students a creative and fun way to realize the value of a master’s degree in Interactive Media.”

Twitter rolling out self-serve advertising platform

Twitter has begun rolling out a self-serve advertising platform that will allow advertisers to buy advertisements directly through Twitter instead of going through a sales rep. The platform is currently being tested with a handful of existing advertisers and is slowly rolling out to everyone else. The rumor mill has been talking about this self-serve ad platform for a while, and the platform finally arrived in November.

The platform allows advertisers to easily buy promoted tweets, trends, or accounts. With the platform, advertisers can choose a product, set a price and duration and pay with a credit card through their web browser. Since it is still in test mode, only tweets and accounts can be purchased right now.

Xeni Jardin live tweets mammogram

It may no longer be Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but Xeni Jardin, technology writer and co-editor of Boing Boing, raised awareness last Thursday by live tweeting a mammogram appointment. Since two of her friends were diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, she went to get a mammogram as a precaution, but has since found out that she has breast cancer.

Jardin’s experience was full of social media influences. She tweeted pictures (or as she called it, “Instagrammed her mammogram”) from the clinic of the equipment and of herself in the robe the center provides that she said “make you feel like its gonna be ok.” She also created the hashtag #myfirstmammo. Finally, she even found the Pink Lotus Breast Center via Yelp and mentioned their Twitter account in her tweets.

Since getting the results of the mammogram and confirming the results that she has breast cancer, the support from the Twitter community has been huge. She continues to tweet about what is to come and is encouraging her followers to go get mammograms.

#Cainwreck

You’ve probably heard that Herman Cain has suspended his bid for presidential nomination. However, you may not know that in his announcement, he quoted lyrics from a song from the Pokemon movie and ironically referred to his new website as “Plan B.” In the Twitterverse, fodder like that doesn’t go unnoticed.

The Twitterverse started talking about the announcement before it even happened, with the hashtag #possibleHermanCainAnnouncements trending. Once Cain’s announcement started, the tweets didn’t slow down. His quoting Pokemon got so many people talking about it that several topics about and characters from Pokemon began trending. The Twitterverse also came up with #Cainwreck to refer to the announcement and the hashtag trended.

New partnership between X Factor USA and Twitter

A new partnership between Twitter and the TV show The X Factor USA will add Twitter to the list of ways audience members can vote, in addition to voting by phone, text messages, online, and mobile apps.

The new form of voting will be through direct messages to the account, not regular tweets. Normally, you can only direct message someone if they are following you, but Twitter has made it so that anyone following @TheXFactorUSA can vote. More details on how to vote can be found here.

Steve Martin turns tweets into a book

On October 27, funny guy Steve Martin (@SteveMartinToGo) tweeted: “Due to absolutely no demand, soon I’m publishing a book of my tweets. Many of your replies included! All my profits to charity.”

The book, titled “The Ten, Make That Nine, Habits of Very Organized People. Make That Ten.” is slated to be around 112 pages of Martin’s tweets and fan replies. It’s expected to be released around June 2012.

The book’s description explains that, “With over 1.4 million followers (a number growing by the day), and a now famously uncanny ability to pack 140 characters with a maximum amount of humor and wit, Steve Martin has defined what it means to be a celebrity in today’s world of social media.”

Kim Kardashian files for divorce, takes over Trending Topics

On October 31, Kim Kardashian (@KimKardashian) filed for divorce from her husband of 72 days, Kris Humphries. After all of the publicity surrounding the wedding, including a 2-night, 4-hour wedding special on E!, the news of divorce has caused quite a stir.

On Twitter, several joking hashtags and  Trending Topics began circulating, including #ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage, which is still the number one Trending Topic.

While the public may not have been sensitive, Kim’s sisters Kourtney and Khloe tweeted support for their sister. Kim has not tweeted anything since the news of her divorce broke.

Remembering Steve Jobs

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Last night, Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. and Pixar Animation passed away. The reaction on the Internet was tremendous. Normally, when a notable person dies, the reaction on social media can be pretty insensitive. Jokes are made, fingers are pointed, and people question the actual impact of the deceased individual. Not this time.

I was surprised and impressed to see my Twitter timeline filled with more condolences than jokes. There are still handfuls of insensitive remarks, but the vast majority of people realize the profound impact Jobs had on our lives.

On Twitter, timelines were filled with quotes by, about, and dedicated to Jobs. Several of Twitter’s top trending topics were related to Jobs. Trending topics include #RIPSteveJobs, #ThankYouSteve, #iSad, “STAY HUNGRY,” and “think different.” “Stay hungry” is a quote from Jobs’ commencement address at Stanford University’s 114th Commencement in 2005. Even other tech guys such as Bill Gates and Steve Wozniak were trending as people tweeted and retweeted quotes from the two on how they felt about Jobs’ passing.

There were also a lot of clever salutes to Jobs and the products Apple has created. Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino tweeted “Everybody put an iPhone up in the air one time #ripstevejobs” with a link to a picture of him holding his iPhone, and it was retweeted over 100 times. Many people also started chain tweets along the lines of “RT if you are using an Apple product right now.”

Grief was also expressed on Facebook, where Mark Zuckerberg himself posted a status update saying: “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you”

Apple’s homepage has been cleaned of all the announcements of new products from the event on Tuesday, replaced by a simple but powerful picture of Jobs. The picture links to another page that says a few words about Jobs and encourages people to share their thoughts by emailing rememberingsteve@apple.com. Google’s homepage also pays tribute to Jobs, right below the search box.

On Tumblr, which is popular for sharing images and memes, people were sharing amazing images in memory of Steve Jobs. We’ve put together a slideshow of a few of the pictures we liked the most.

Have you seen any other powerful memorials or tributes to Steve Jobs? What is your favorite Apple innovation?
